Introduction of business

The ferry and logistics business is run together with our international shipping business and domestic shipping business to provide domestic and international shipping and logistics services as the Libera Group.

Our Ferry business includes marine transport of cargo, vehicles and passengers on the routes between Hakodate-Aomori, and Hakodate-Oma, as well as chartering ferries to the operators of Tomakomai-Hachinohe route and Tomakomai-Oarai route. We play an important role in the marine transport between Hokkaido and Honshu, Japan main land.

As we are responsible for precious lives and cargo, we strive to ensure safe and reliable operations through active acquisition of International Safety Management Code (ISM) and introduction of a fire-fighting plan for the first time in Japan. We are also constantly engaged in necessary environmental measures, through improving fuel efficiency by introducing new ships and changing the terminal lighting to LED.

We have strengthened the functions that are useful during natural disasters, such as accommodation of injured people and water/electricity supply to the land, on all the ferries that were introduced after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. In addition, we participate in the joint trainings of DMAT (disaster medical assistance team). Through these measures, we aim to make greater contribution to the society.

We strive to become a company that contributes to the vitalization and development of “Tsugaru Strait Area” as an important social logistics infrastructure that connects the tourism and logistics between Honshu and Hokkaido. We will continuously develop our regional-contribution-centered business.

In the multipurpose ship business, we had a one-year readiness contract to provide a high-speed vessel with the Ministry of Defense that began in 2014. This contract was made to mitigate disasters and support affected people after having responded to a request for transporting emergency supplies from the Ministry of Defense after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Under the contract, we are to be ready to leave port within 72 hours after receiving a request in case of disaster. The Japanese Ministry of Defense is strengthening its high-speed transportation capacity in the case of an emergency and started to use our high-speed vessel in the form of a PFI (private financial initiative) in FY 2016. This is the first PFI in the shipping business in Japan, and it allows for the securement of stable, long-term transportation capacity, rather than a one-year contract. In this aspect of the multipurpose ship business, we are committed to helping Japan’s disaster mitigation policies using our ships, knowledge, and know-how. Moreover, during the term of the contract, the vessel can be used for the private sector; therefore, we will utilize it for regional development or disaster mitigation measures throughout around Japan to further contribute to society.

In the logistics business, we have a national network system mainly for trailer transportation between Hokkaido and Honshu. The network includes not only routes for shipping by sea but also those for regional land transportation within Hokkaido, Honshu and other areas.
We also focus on the acquisition of G Mark and Green Management Certification as well as environmental/safety measures, and strive to provide high-quality/high value-added transportation services while fulfilling our social responsibility.
Coupled with the ferry business, this logistics business allows us to provide high-quality services that satisfy customers, making a huge contribution to logistics between Hokkaido and Honshu.
